Getting Site Ready for Wet and Windy Weather
Autumn in the UK. You know what it’s like – muddy boots, sideways rain and approximately 47 checks of the weather forecast before lunch time.
For anyone working outdoors, wet and windy weather is all part of the job. But while a bit of rain doesn’t necessarily mean tools down, turning up prepared can make a big difference to your comfort, safety and ability to crack on with the job.
From waterproof workwear to protecting your tools from the elements, here are a few ways to get site-ready when the British weather does its worst.
Start with the right wet weather gear
There’s nothing quite like starting an eight-hour shift and realising your supposedly waterproof jacket gave up 20 minutes in.
Good-quality wet weather gear is an essential to have to hand throughout autumn and winter, particularly if you regularly work outdoors. Look for waterproof jackets and trousers designed for trade use, with enough flexibility to move comfortably while you work.
For particularly exposed sites or jobs where you’re outside for long periods, heavy duty waterproof workwear can offer extra protection against persistent rain and wind.
Layering is useful too. Autumn mornings can be freezing, while an afternoon of physical work can soon have you overheating. Multiple lighter layers underneath your waterproof outerwear make it easier to adjust as conditions change.
Prioritise PPE
Staying dry is about more than being comfortable, your PPE still needs to do its job when the weather turns.
Depending on your trade and working environment, PPE waterproof clothing could include waterproof hi-vis jackets, overtrousers and other protective outer layers. When choosing waterproof PPE, make sure it’s appropriate for the job and doesn’t interfere with any other protective equipment you need to wear.
And don’t overlook what’s on your feet. Proper waterproof safety boots with good grip can make a huge difference on wet, muddy or slippery surfaces. Keep your tools out of the worst of it
You might be prepared for the rain, but are your tools?
Water and tools generally aren’t the best of mates, particularly when electrical equipment, batteries and metal components are involved.
Keep tools covered and stored somewhere dry whenever possible, rather than leaving them exposed between jobs. A sturdy toolbox or weather-resistant storage solution can help protect equipment from sudden downpours, while power tools and batteries should always be stored and used according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Watch the conditions – not just the rain
Rain gets most of the attention, but autumn wind can cause its own problems.
Keep an eye on loose materials, equipment and anything that could become unstable in strong gusts. Working at height can also become considerably more hazardous in wet or windy conditions, so always follow the relevant site procedures and safety guidance.
Ultimately, getting through autumn on site is about being prepared. With reliable waterproof workwear, suitable PPE, proper footwear and a plan for keeping your tools protected, a gloomy forecast doesn’t automatically have to stop play.
After all, if UK trades waited for perfect weather, nothing would get built until June!
